A big week for Bert

Yesterday I woke up bright and early to strap the donor roof onto the top of Bert and make sure he was all ready to make the big trip to Maitland. This is where a VW restorer is going to cut off the old roof and replace it with the donor. 

The trip went exactly to plan even giving Hugh (the photographer) and myself time to check out a local cafe, which included nice coffee and also an old Renault that they had sitting out the back.    

Also thanks to Arlen, Cam, Jo and Ryan for helping get the roof on as it was a bit of an effort.

Off With The Top

It has finally come time to take the poptop out and through the process it revealed the true extent of the rust. 

See for yourself what crappy repair work and wrong installation of parts can cause.

Strip Tease

 Over the past month Bert has been slowly shedding weight as he gets ready for the new roof!

 

Madison and I have had help from our good mates Nick and Tyler with this one. For me this was the first time removing glass and was quite nerve racking as I didn't want to smash any of the windows.

 

The rubbers were so solid (as you can see in the first image) that nick was able to snap them into sections afterwards. 

My favourite thing about this build is that everything we are working on is totally new and a challenge. 

Now it's time to learn how to tig weld!!!
